Gymnastics Canada announces involvement in LGBTQI2S Sport Inclusion Pilot Project

A critical component of this work is engagement with the GCG community – particularly those who identify as LGBTQI2S, in order to examine the current status of LGBTQI2S inclusion in all disciplines of gymnastics. In order to do this, confidential interviews will be conducted by the following GCG Working Group Members and LGBTQI2S Athlete and Coach Ambassadors:

Over the next few months, further outreach will be initiated to engage those who identify as LGBTQI2S within GCG. In the meantime, please feel welcome to contact in confidence any of the GCG LGBTQI2S Ambassadors via their email listed above.

Also on the GCG LGBTQI2S Sport Inclusion Pilot Project Working Group are:

  • Peter Nicol, GCG President/CEO;
  • Meredith Warner, GCG Sport Development Manager;
  • Brian Forrester, Gymnastics BC CEO;
  • Jennifer Birch-Jones, Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS); and
  • Christine Hsu, Egale Canada.

GCG also encourages individuals and groups to access the following excellent resources developed for the Canadian sporting community to further build their own awareness and understanding of LGBTQI2S issues in sport, and the important role each of us can play in making sport more welcoming to sexual and gender minorities.

ABOUT THE LGBTQI2S SPORT INCLUSION TASK FORCE

The LGBTQI2S Sport Inclusion Task Force (SITF) is a flexible, informal coalition working to end LGBTQI2S bias in sport through education for, and promotion of, LGBTQI2S inclusion in Canadian sport. Building on the momentum from the Sport Inclusion Summit hosted in partnership with Pride House Toronto during the 2015 Pan Am/Para Pan Am Games in Toronto, the SITF is comprised of representatives from a range of organizations, including national sport and multi-sport organizations, LGBTQI2S sport organizations, LGBTQI2S human rights organizations, the Pride House Movement, and universities.
