It was a tight race for the top spot on the podium with the top-5 men all scoring over 86 points, but it was Xiao who was victorious at the end with a total score of 86.933. His fellow countryman Chaopan Lin took the silver with 86.448 points, while Kenzo Shirai of Japan took the bronze with 86.431 points.
Clay had his best performance on the pommel horse with a score of 13.566 putting him in 9th position on that apparatus. With a goal of going six for six in the finals, Clay was very satisfied with his result: “I was so happy with the result today. The crowd today especially was phenomenal. Every event – right before I presented, and right after the crowd was just going crazy and it was amazing.”
“The biggest highlight for me was rings – right as I landed that last dismount – the feeling, I just can’t describe it. It was such an amazing feeling hitting 6 for 6 in the all-around finals at worlds, and that it was in Canada, was just an added bonus.”
This was Clay’s best result at a World Championships – he was the alternate in 2015 after suffering an injury in training, and was 69th in the all-around in 2014. He only just returned to competition this past May where he won the Canadian all-around title at the Canadian Championships in Montreal.
“This is a really good confidence booster. My first big confidence booster was winning nationals, but now, carrying on with this World Championships was amazing. I feel really good, and I now know what I need to do for my next competition.”
The World Championships are now over for our men’s team as no athletes advanced to the apparatus finals.
Ellie Black of Halifax, NS and Brooklyn Moors of Cambridge, ON take the stage next in the all-around finals on Friday at 7:00 pm ET, which will be streamed live by CBC Sports. CBC will also broadcast the event starting at 8:00pm local time.
The vault finals featuring Black and Shallon Olsen take place on Saturday starting at 1:00pm ET, along with apparatus finals for men’s vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bars, and uneven bars for the women. CBC Sports will also live stream this event starting at 1:00 pm ET and broadcast the event at 3:00pm ET.
The final day of the World Championships features the apparatus finals for women’s balance beam (Black) and floor exercise (Black and Moors), and men’s floor, pommel horse, and rings. CBC Sports will live stream the event at 1:00pm ET and broadcast the event at 2:00pm ET.
