Whelan executes solid routine to lead Canada on Day 3 of 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships

Whelan’s score of 15.450 continued Canada’s string of personal best performances at these championships, and has her sitting in 21st in the overall clubs standings, with more routines to come tomorrow. She’s sitting 34th in the all-around standings.

“Today I wanted to do clean apparatus elements and body difficulties and I was determined to stay focused on what I was doing in each moment of the routine, thinking about every correction, just as I do in training,” said Whelan following the day’s competition. “I wasn’t trying to kill it, I just got out there and performed my best for myself and my teammates.”

Also competing today was Sophie Crane of Toronto who posted a score of 14.050 after dropping her clubs twice to finish the day ranked 29th. Crane was the gold medallist with this routine at the 2018 Commonwealth Games this past April in Australia.

Competition continues tomorrow with Whelan and Katherine Uchida of Toronto taking to the floor in the qualification rounds for ribbon. The team competition will also wrap-up tomorrow, with Canada currently sitting in 14th place. Whelan credits this competition for being key to Canada’s success thus far at the competition.

“I think one of the reasons we have been doing so well at this Worlds is because of the team event. Knowing that you are competing as a team, not really individually, pushes you to do your best and also takes away some of the pressure knowing that your teammates are there for you, and for once we are competing with each other not against one another.”

Friday will feature the top-24 athletes competing in the individual all-around finals before the start of the group competition on Saturday. You can catch all the action from Friday on CBC Sports.
