Russia took the gold medal in the team competition, with Bulgaria taking silver, and Italy the bronze.
Both Uchida and Carmen Whelan of Aurora, ON competed their ribbon routines as their final event today, with Uchida posting a score of 14.900 to finish 32nd overall in ribbon, while Whelan scored 14.700 to finish 34th. Whelan finished the all-around competition in 45th place, while Toronto’s Sophie Crane finished 47th.
The team format included three routines with hoop and ball; and two routines with clubs and ribbon totaling 10 routines. The last time the event was contested, Canada placed 20th overall.
“Overall the 2018 World Championships have been thrilling for the rhythmic individual team and staff,” commented rhythmic gymnastics national team director Teresa Orr following the competition. “We are delighted that all three gymnasts performed personal bests in one or two apparatus and maintained consistency throughout the competition. Carmen improved her all around total from last year by 7.3 points and Katherine, who competed in only three apparatus this year, increased her total by 9.6 points. Sophie caught the eye of many judges with this being her first year of senior and competing at her first World Championships.”
Only the top-24 athletes have advanced to the all-around finals which will take place on Friday, and will be live-streamed by CBC Sports on their various platforms, so this means the end of competition for Crane, Uchida, and Whelan who will not get much of a rest before representing Canada at the 2018 Senior Pan American Championships in Lima, PER from September 28th to 30th.
Saturday will see the beginning of the group competition where Canada’s senior national group will compete their five hoops routine, as well as their three balls and 2 ropes routine in the group all-around competition. CBC Sports will also be live-streaming this competition.
