Miller-Burko sat in first place following the preliminary round after scoring 67,500 points with O’Brien right on her heels in second place with 67,300 points. In the final, Lina Sjoberg of Sweden had two great passes and captured the gold medal. O’Brien and Miller-Burko finished in second and third place with 67,900 points each.
“Coming into this competition we both had very different strategic plans,” said O’Brien and Miller-Burko following the competition. “In the end, we both executed what we had been practicing and we were extremely pleased with our performances, and we were excited when we saw we had tied! This was definitely a confidence boost for us both leading into Worlds, and a great trip to experience with our newest team member.”
Danielle Grieve of Regina, SK finished in seventh place in the DMT final, scoring 32,500 points. Mario Bruno placed fifth in the men’s DMT final with 70,000 points, while Mark Armstrong finished in sixth position with 65,600 points. “I was very impressed with all our DMT athletes,” said team coach, Curt de Wolff. “Everyone prepared well prior to arriving here in Spain, as well as in their pre-competition trainings and they all handled their competition nerves well. Our girls looked exceptionally strong, which is really exciting as we lead into World Championships next month.”
On the World Cup side of the competition, Rosie MacLennan of King City, ON finished 13th overall in the women’s trampoline event with 103,530 points. “As the last World Cup leading into the World Championships, this competition was a great way to gauge where all the athletes are at in their preparation,” said MacLennan. “A lot of the top athletes performed strongly and while I didn’t perform as well as I would have liked, it was very motivating and I’m excited to get home and polish my routines. I’m very proud of my teammates, everyone had some really strong aspects of their routines. Many of them are in their first season at this level and show a lot of potential.”
Bronte Dundas of Richmond Hill, ON finished 25th, Sarah Milette of Longueuil, QC finished 28th, and Sophiane Methot of La Prairie, QC finished 42nd overall in the women’s trampoline event. Milette and Methot also finished 12th in the women’s synchronised trampoline event with 81.600 points.
In the men’s trampoline competition, Keegan Soehn of Red Deer, AB finished 37th, Andrew Martin finished 44th, Jacob Cranham finished 48th, and Kyle Soehn of Red Deer, AB finished 56th overall. “This World Cup competition was a great stepping stone for the team as we near the World Championships,” said Keegan Soehn. “Being the first World competition for the male athletes this year, improvements will be made as we refine our routines.”
Team Canada will compete at the 2017 FIG World Championships in Trampoline Gymnastics in Sofia Bulgaria from November 9th to 12th.
