“I’m feeling pretty good about my competition. Those weren’t my best routines that I think I could have done, but I’m really proud of what I put out there,” said Tam who cited her experience gained from competing in the World Championships last week in synchronized trampoline with Sophiane Méthot as a real benefit for this competition. “Competing in synchro last week gave me a good feel for the atmosphere of the gym and gave me a few extra times to jump on the competition trampolines which I think really helped my competition today.”
The other women competing in the 17-21 individual competition included Kailyn Arndt of Edmonton, AB who finished 29th, Sara-Jade Berthiaume of Trois-Rivière, QC who finished 33rd, and Kalena Soehn of Red Deer, AB who despite laying down a strong optional routine, finished 47th after stepping out on her second skill in her compulsory routine.
The competitors in the men’s 17-21 individual trampoline competition had a bit of a tough day with Benjamin Lagacé of Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, QC placing highest at 35th. Zachary Lavallée of Terrebonne, QC, who celebrated his birthday at the competition today, finished 53rd; David Johnston of Mississauga, ON finished 64th after punching through the springs on his optional routine, and Kai Dwyer of Fall River, NS finished 67th.
In 15-16 synchro trampoline, the duo of Cameron Atwell of New Westminster, BC and Erik Aruda of Caledon, ON had the top result of the day finishing in 11th position, while Gavin Dodd of Kamloops, BC and his partner Roman Carlson of Calgary finished just behind them in 12th. On the women’s side, Jorydn Yendley of Kelowna, BC and her partner Alexandra Boucher of Calgary were the top finishers in 13th position, while Sophia Mosieev of Toronto and Maja Bonham of Vancouver finished 24th.
Teegan Maschke of Maple Ridge, BC was the highest finisher in women’s 13-14 double mini-trampoline (DMT) scoring 63.100 to finish 12th overall. Makayla-Skye Koci of Port Coquitlam, BC finished 26th.
Chris Uvakov was the only competitor in the men’s 13-14 DMT competition and finished 13th with a total score of 67.500 after laying down two strong passes.
“We had a great competition. We brought a larger team than we have in a decade, and it was great because we had a lot of new blood, a lot of young athletes and inexperienced ones, and they really delivered – there were so many hit performances,” said Denis Vachon, the team manager and coaching lead at the competition, who is also the national team advisor for tumbling at Gymnastics Canada. “Our target was to put people in the top 2/3 of each category, assuming they hit their routines, and everyone that hit their routines ended up ahead of our target which is exactly what we were hoping for. For us it’s definitely mission accomplished at this competition.”
