Canadian artistic gymnasts qualify for finals on day two of the Youth Olympic Games

Spence has competed on vault and floor and will advance to both apparatus finals. Her combined score of 13.791 points on vault had her finishing third, while she finished eighth on floor with a score of 12.533. Spence currently sits fourth in the all-around competition with two apparatus to go.

“I’m very happy and proud of my results from the last few days,” said Spence. “I’ve been trying not to think of this as a big competition so that’s been helping with dealing with stress and the pressure and so far, that’s been helping a lot! I’m very happy and having so much fun here so far! I’m hoping to make it to the all-around finals and hopefully another final.”

After the first four apparatus in the men’s artistic competition, Dolci currently sits sixth in the all-around event with a score of 53.232 points. Dolci has qualified in second place for the vault final with a combined score of 13.950 points and will also advance to the rings final, scoring 13.466 in the qualifying competition. Dolci finished ninth on floor and will be a reserve for the final and 13thon pommel horse.

“I’m pretty happy with my first two days of competition,” said Dolci. “I had a couple small mistakes on pommel horse and floor on day one, but regrouped well on rings and vault to make two finals. Now I just need to stay focused for the last two apparatus and then finals.”

In the trampoline competition, Canadian flag bearer Jérémy Chartier of Montreal, QC scored 86.300 points and finished 11thoverall.

These Games are unique in that they will feature a multidiscipline team event whereby gymnasts from all disciplines (artistic, rhythmic, trampoline, acrobatic) will be drawn into 12 teams of 13 gymnasts. Each team will be comprised of one acrobatic pair, three men’s artistic (MAG) and three women’s artistic (WAG) gymnasts, three rhythmic (RG) gymnasts, and from trampoline (TG) – one male and one female athlete.

There will be a qualification phase for each discipline that will determine which athletes will advance to the individual discipline finals, and results for the team competition will be calculated by adding the rank obtained by the gymnast/pair within their discipline to those obtained by their teammates. The winner will be the team with the lowest total score.

Team Canada gymnasts will compete on the following teams: Spence – Team MacLennan, Dolci – Team Yang, Natalie Garcia (Mississauga, ON) – Team Comaneci, and Chartier – Team Bessonova.

The top-8 athletes in each discipline from the qualification phase will advance to the individual discipline finals. There will be all-around and individual apparatus finals for men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics, all-around finals in rhythmic gymnastics, and in trampoline – separate finals for men’s and women’s individual trampoline.

On Tuesday, Spence will compete on uneven bars, Dolci will compete on parallel bars, and Garcia will make her Games’ debut when she competes on ball and hoop.
