Black and Moors finish off the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships with strength and style

Black, who made Canadian gymnastics history on Friday night taking home a silver medal in the all-around competition, competed in both the beam and floor finals. On the beam, an event she qualified for in fourth, an unfortunate fall near the end of her routine pushed her out of medal contention, leaving her in eighth place overall with a total of 12.400. Pauline Schaeffer of Germany took the gold with a score of 13.533. Morgan Hurd of the USA, the newly crowned all-around World Champion, took the silver with a score of 13.400, while Tabea Alt took the bronze for Germany with a score of 13.300.

On the floor exercise, Black unfortunately stepped out of bounds costing her a 0.3 deduction to her score. She ultimately finished in seventh with a score of 12.900.

“Making a world final isn’t easy, so that was an accomplishment in itself,” said Black who competed in all three days of finals in Montreal. “For all of the kids that were able to come out and see the competition, it’s good for them to see that even the best in the world make mistakes and you have to get back up and you have to keep fighting and you have to keep going and so that’s a really good thing for them to see. It keeps us going too – if everything is perfect all the time, the sport would be easy and it’s not! It keeps you hungry and working hard for the next one.”

Moors, who won the Longines Award for Elegance on Friday night during the all-around finals, performed another beautiful floor routine and finished the competition in fifth with a score of 13.650. Mai Murakami of Japan took the gold with a total of 14.233. Jade Carey of the USA took the silver with a score of 14.200 while Claudia Fragapane of Great Britain took the bronze with a score of 13.933.

“I am very happy with my performance. It was such an honour first off to even be in this final so going in I was happy! I didn’t even care if I came last, I made it here and I was so proud of myself. This is my first year going elite so just to be here is such a great opportunity and I’ve gained a lot of experience that will help me for the future,” said Moors.

Canada wraps up these World Championships with Black’s historic silver medal, athletes having qualified for eight finals, and plenty of amazing experiences to learn from as they prepare for future competitions.
