Six medals for Canada on final day at Jesolo Trophy

In the senior finals, two-time Canadian all around champion Ellie Black of Halifax won bronze on vault and Sabrina Gill of Oakville, Ont., also won bronze on uneven bars.

Black also placed fourth in the floor final.

For Gill, who has struggled at times during the last two years, getting back onto the podium at a major international event, was a sign that she’s getting her career back on track.

““This is another step in the right direction,” said Gill, a former Canadian junior champion. “It felt good and with the Pan Am Games and world championships coming up this year I’m just going to be taking things one day at a time and see what happens.”

Shallon Olson of Coquitlam, B.C., came up with the best Canadian result of the day, winning silver on vault in the junior competition.

“It felt amazing getting up on the podium,” said Olsen, a gymnastics phenom who first gained national attention as a ten year old at the 2010 Canada Championships.

“My double Yurchenko has been getting better and the more I work on it the better it gets,” added Olsen, referring to a double-twisting somersault over the vault that has become a key ingredient to her success.

Canadian junior champion Rose-Kaying Woo of La Prairie, Que., won bronze on beam and uneven bars and  Megane Roberts and Jade Chrobok,  both of Toronto, shared the bronze medal in the floor exercise.

Chrobok also placed fifth in the uneven bars final and Ana Paduraria of Whitby, Ont., was sixth on beam.

As expected, U.S. gymnasts ran off with the lion’s share of the medals in the finals after winning gold in both the junior and senior team events on Saturday.

Two-time world champion Simone Biles dominated as she did in the all around on Saturday, winning gold on floor, vault, and balance beam.

Other Canadian senior finalists were Helody Cyrenne of Montreal, (5th vault), Isabela Onyshko of Minnedosa, Man., (4th balance beam, 5th floor, 8th uneven bars).

Canadian women’s team director Dave Brubaker of Sarnia, Ont., singled out the overall performance of the senior team as one of the positives to come out of the four-day competition.

“If we have some kids with podium potential for the world championships or Olympics they need a real stable team around them,” said Brubaker. “I think we’re going to be able to create that but it’s going to take some time.”
