Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors meets in Ottawa January 13 to 15, 2023

Elected at the 2022 Annual General Meeting in September, the Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors have been meeting monthly over Zoom through until the first face to face meeting in Ottawa this past weekend.  The meeting was also attended by a Sport Canada representative, Julie Seaborn (Manager of National Sport Organizations).  This meeting provided an ideal opportunity for Board members to orient themselves with each other, to get a good understanding of the current planning, operational and financial position of the organization, and to also begin to build out the Board’s collective philosophy on how it wants to lead the national body moving forward.

Some highlights of work completed during the weekend include the following:

  • Confirmation of Board roles and responsibilities, including the consideration of further Board appointments to fill vacant positions.
  • Discussion on Safe Sport matters as they pertain to risk management, commitment to cultural change and alignment with member responsibilities and priorities.
  • In depth discussion on the “ethos” of Board governance and how this Board wishes to reflect its collective priorities within their governance approach.
  • Updates on various programming priorities and staffing priorities for the organization, including a review of the Strategic Plan priorities.
  • GymCan’s continued role in the international gymnastics community, including the importance of Canadian representatives on key FIG, PAGU and other international bodies.
  • Discussion on how to continue building strong dialogue between the national body and its provincial/territorial partners.

The GymCan Board is committed to being engaged in Gymnastics Canada events and activities and the Board will build out a schedule of opportunities for Board members to attend key activities throughout the year.  The next face to face Board meeting will be linked to the timing of the Trampoline Elite Canada competition in Montreal in mid-March.
