For the Canadian women, the competition is doubly important, since it is part of the selection process for the Olympic team. The hopefuls include:
- Élite Canada senior champion Isabela Onyshko;
- Young Quebecers Victoria–Kayen Woo (Gym-Richelieu) and Audrey Rousseau (Équilibrix) who participated in the most recent World Gymnastics Championships,
- As well as rising stars Rose-Kaying Woo (Gym-Richelieu) and Shallon Olsen.
Since 1991, gymnasts from every continent have graced L’International Gymnix podium. This year, not less than 15 countries will be represented, including Canada, the United States, France, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, and Romania. During its 25 years of existence, several Olympic champions, including Lilia Podkopayeva (1996), Carly Patterson (2004), Shawn Johnson (2008), and Aliya Mustafina (2012) have competed at L’International Gymnix, and this year will be no exception.
More than ever, gymnastics is in the news in Quebec. This year Montréal is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its own Olympic Games and the event’s queen, the renowned Nadia Comaneci. As well, given that the World Gymnastics Championships will take place in Montréal in 2017, several of the best Canadian and international athletes attending L’International Gymnix will give spectators a sneak peek of the type of performances they can expect during the historic competition for the city.
Must-attend competitions:
Friday at 6:15 pm: The Senior International Cup by team with 4 of the world’s best teams who will use this event to prepare for Rio.
Saturday at 6:15 pm: The Junior International Cup by team that will bring together the world’s elite on their way to 2020, with the 2015 World Champions (United States) and 7 countries out of the world’s Top 12.
Sunday at 1:15 pm: The international finals unite the weekend’s best gymnasts who will compete for titles on the 4 apparatus. This competition will also give the young prodigy Zoé Allaire-Bourgie from Club Gymnix an opportunity to shine on the international scene. Since she is too young to participate officially, she will perform demonstrations during the finals.
Ellie Black, the 2015 Pan American Games champion and Canadian team leader, will be on site Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm to sign autographs and present medals.
