Black moved up two positions from the qualifiers where she finished sixth. Today she had the highest execution score on her first vault, but due to a lower degree of difficulty, wasn’t able to mount the podium for a second time at these championships, scoring 14.416 overall. Maria Pasek of Russia, the defending World Champion, took the gold with 14.850 points. Jade Carey of the USA took silver with 14.766 points, and Giulia Steingruber from Switzerland took the bronze with 14.466 points.
“I came in today with a strong attitude of just having strong vaults and just doing them the best I could. This is a very tough vault final, so just to be a part of it was amazing,” said Black who made Canadian gymnastics history on Friday night, winning the silver medal in the women’s all-around competition. “There were amazing athletes in this final – Olympians and World Championship medallists, and competing with Oksana (Chusovitina) is incredible just on its own because she’s such a legend.”
Olsen, who finished eighth in the vault finals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio went all out with her two vaults, but unfortunately was unable to land clean on her first vault – the Amanar, a vault she had landed cleanly in Rio. Her second vault had the highest degree of difficulty in the event and was landed cleanly, leaving her with a total of 14.233.
“It was an awesome feeling to know that the whole crowd was behind me, supporting me. I know I gave that vault my all and even though it didn’t go the way I wanted it to, I still have the future to look forward to. To know that I got the second one on my feet was a feeling of great accomplishment,” said Olsen.
Black is back on the competition floor on Sunday for the beam and floor finals. She’ll be joined in the floor finals by the newly crowned Longines Award of Elegance winner Brooklyn Moors of Cambridge, ON. The competition starts at 1:00pm ET and will be live streamed and broadcast by the CBC.
Sunday will also feature the apparatus finals for men’s vault, parallel bars, and high bar.
