Whelan, from Silhouettes of York Gymnastics Club, continued her impressive routines today, scoring an outstanding 18.000 points in her clubs routine and a 17.300 in her ribbon performance to finish the preliminary round in first place with 66.150 points. Carmel Kallemaa from host club Kalev Estienne Rhythmic Gymnastics Club had strong clubs and ribbon routines to finish in second place with a score of 62.050.
In junior action, Garcia of Mississauga Newnorth finished slightly ahead of Michel Vivier of Viva Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in Ontario with a score of 55.550. Vivier scored 15.450 points in her clubs routine to boost her all-around score to 55.350 which advanced her to the finals.
The senior group comprised of Elizabet Belittchenko, Renna Cukier, Vanessa Panov, Cleo Page, Anastasia Shanko, and Alexandra Udachina, completed their three balls, two ribbons routine and were pleased with the results. “We were obviously nervous but we just wanted to show our hard work over the year to the gymnastics community,” said Belittchenko. “It could have been better, but we did some things well. We did really well on the hoops but now we’re just really focused on tomorrow and want to do our absolute best in the finals.”
“Today we completed the qualifying rounds that select the top-15 junior and senior athletes for the all-around final and apparatus finals,” said Teresa Orr, national team director for rhythmic gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “We’ve witnessed several engaging performances by many talented gymnasts over the past two days, and I’m pleased with the progress our gymnasts and coaches have made. We’re on the right track for the start of the new cycle and the future looks promising.”
All-around and apparatus finals begin Sunday morning at 9:00am for the juniors and 1:00pm for the seniors.
