Silver medal in women’s team event at FISU Games

Olympians Ellie Black (Halifax, NS) and Brittany Rogers (Calgary, AB) joined Canadian teammates Jessica Dowling (Dundas, ON), Denelle Pedrick (Wilcox, SK), and Briannah Tsang (Burnaby, BC) in impressive fashion to capture the silver medal.

“I’m very proud of the girls’ performance today,” said coach Dorina Stan. “The entire team stayed positive and focused throughout the entire competition, which resulted in a great performance.”

The women’s best result came on beam, where they finished first overall, more than one point ahead of the Russian delegation with 40.475 points.

The team was led by Black, who scored 56.050 points and sits first overall heading into the all-around final. Black also qualified for every apparatus final including a first place qualification on beam with a score of 14.400 points, almost one point ahead of second place.

“The team did great today,” said Black. “We went out with a really good attitude and mindset and were able to show some great gymnastics. We really came together as a team. I’m excited to get back out on the competition floor with Briannah and Brittany in the finals.”

In addition to Black’s advancement to the apparatus and all-around finals, Tsang finished in 13th position overall and will advance to the top 18 all-around final. Rogers will also advance to apparatus finals, qualifying in 3rd place for the vault final and 8th place for the beam final.

“I’m very excited about how the team did today,” said Tsang. “We worked hard to be here and throughout the competition, stayed composed with great attitudes and it paid off. I can’t wait to put it all out there for the all-around finals tomorrow, and I’m excited to see Ellie and Brittany rock their finals as well.

Women’s all-around finals will take place on Tuesday and apparatus finals on Wednesday.
