“I am very happy to welcome Karen to our leadership team,” said Ian Moss, Interim CEO and High Performance Director for Gymnastics Canada. “Her high performance pedigree is second to none and we know that the respect and success she garnered in her athletic career will certainly translate into a strong vision and direction for our national trampoline program well into the future.”
“I am honoured to be joining Gymnastics Canada as the National Team Director for Trampoline Gymnastics and I am excited to carry on the great work that has been done across the country to grow and develop the sport. I look forward to developing a strong working relationship with our high performance leadership team and provincial/territorial member associations as we evolve and enhance both our athlete and coach development systems to continue Canada’s position as a leading trampoline gymnastics nation.”
Beyond her athletic achievements, Cockburn is also a Level 3 NCCP trampoline coach, and coached occasionally for the last 20 years while she continued to train as a competitive athlete. She has been a guest clinician at various trampoline and tumbling camps across North America, and was also a Program Manager at Gymnastics Ontario from 2012-2013 where she led their transition to new technical rules and regulations. From 2005-2010 she was the athlete representative on the Trampoline and Tumbling technical committee and then was the Athlete Representative on the Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors from 2010-2014. Cockburn officially announced her retirement from competition in July 2017.
In her role, Cockburn will lead the Olympic discipline of trampoline in an effort to improve on the significant podium performance success that has been achieved by Canadian trampoline athletes at the World Championship and Olympic Games level. Her role as National Team Director also encompasses the need to build the elite athlete development pathway for trampoline in Canada, both in terms of supporting the growth of elite programming at the club level, and through the nurturing of elite coach professional development and opportunity.
