The International Gymnix competition is made up of two different events, the Gymnix Challenge and the Junior International Cup. Both junior and senior gymnasts compete in the Gymnix Challenge, an individual competition, while the Junior International Cup is a team-based event comprising of athletes from six different countries.
In the Gymnix Challenge, Isabela Onyshko captured gold in the all-around competition with 54.134 points and qualified to Sunday’s event finals on beam, floor, and bars. Senior national teammate Victoria Woo of Brossard, QC finished just behind Onyshko in the all-around competition, winning the silver medal with 53.885 points and also advancing to the beam, floor, and bars finals.
In the Junior International Cup, Canada was represented by two teams created based off of results from Elite Canada in February. Canada 1 included Quinn Skrupa (Brandon Eagles Gymnastics), Imogen Paterson (Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics), Zoé Allaire-Bourgie (Club Gymnix), and Emma Spence (Dynamo Gymnastics) while Canada 2 included Sophia King (Calgary Gymnastics Centre), Kyra Cato (Calgary Gymnastics Centre), Lucia Jakab (Okanagan Gymnastics), and Rachael Riley (Bluewater Gymnastics).
Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Junior National Team Coach Alex Bard was pleased with the day one results: “This is the first international competition of the season and I’m very pleased with all of our athletes,” he said following competition. “We look forward to giving these athletes opportunities to represent Canada strongly internationally as we work towards 2020.”
Canada 1 finished in third place in the all-around team competition to secure the bronze medal and Allaire-Bourgie finished first overall to take home the all-around gold medal. Allaire-Bourgie finished with 53.935 points and advanced to Sunday’s event finals on beam, bars, and vault.
“I was surprised, I didn’t know that I was in first place overall,” said Allaire-Bourgie. “I’m really proud with this finish especially here at Gymnix in my hometown.”
All event finals for both the Gymnix Challenge and the Junior International Cup are set to take place on Sunday afternoon.
