Canadian team announced for 2019 World Championships in Trampoline Gymnastics

These championships will be the first gymnastics competition to be held in the recently completed Ariake Gymnastics Centre, home for all disciplines of gymnastics for the 2020 Olympic Games. In trampoline, Olympic qualification spots are on the line with the top-8 finalists in the men’s and women’s competitions booking their tickets for the Games, while qualification spots for the 2021 World Games in Birmingham, USA are on the line for the disciplines of double mini-trampoline (DMT) and tumbling.

“We are looking forward to building off of our recent international success and earning Olympic quotas in trampoline for Tokyo at these Championships,” said Karen Cockburn, National Team Director for Trampoline Gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “These World Championships will give our athletes the opportunity to see and compete in the Olympic venue while perfecting their routines as we enter into this very important Olympic year.”

Niki Lavoie, Program Manager for Trampoline Gymnastics, and technical lead for DMT and tumbling added: “We’re eager to gain quota spots for Canada at the World Games in 2021, and believe we have the team to do so. World Games are our Olympics, and so it will be exciting to see where Canada stands as we build towards that event.”

The Canadian team is highlighted by the reigning World Champion in individual trampoline, and current two-time Olympic champion in individual trampoline, Rosie MacLennan from King City, ON who has her sights set on qualifying for Tokyo 2020 at these Championships. The trampoline team also includes Samantha Smith of Vancouver, BC and Jérémy Chartier of Montreal, QC who were crowned Pan-American champions in trampoline this past summer in Lima, PER. The synchro pairs of Chartier and Olympic silver medallist Jason Burnett, and MacLennan and Sarah Milette are also looking to reach the podium in the synchronized trampoline event.

In DMT and tumbling, Jon Schwaiger of Ancaster, ON will be looking to qualify for his third consecutive World Games in both disciplines, while his teammate Jordan Sugrim of Brampton, ON will also be looking to qualify for another World Games after finishing fifth in tumbling at the 2017 edition. Their fellow Dynamo Gymnastics teammate, and two-time Senior National champion, Jordyn Miller-Burko of Hamilton, ON will be attempting to qualify for her first World Games in DMT.

This event will also see Canada competing in discipline-specific team finals in trampoline, men’s tumbling, and men’s and women’s DMT, as well as an all-around team event where Canada will be looking to improve on their bronze medal finish at the 2018 World Championships.
