City of Edmonton to host 2022 Canadian Gymnaestrada

A performance-based event which is held every four years, the Canadian Gymnaestrada welcomes participants from ages 9 to 90+ to celebrate movement and physical activity in a non-competitive environment while capturing the true essence of the ‘Gymnastics for All’ and ‘Active for Life’ philosophies of sport and recreation.

“We are delighted to be bringing this wonderful event to the people of Edmonton in the summer of 2022,” said Ian Moss, CEO of Gymnastics Canada. “This unique event showcases the uniqueness and beauty of gymnastics as participants demonstrate their physical, technical, and creative abilities, inspired by a wide variety of gymnastics disciplines. It truly is a one-of-a-kind event and we hope that it helps to inspire both young and old to participate in gymnastics.”

In 2018, over 1170 participants took part in the last Canadian Gymnaestrada held in Richmond, BC making it the largest to date.

“Partnering with Gymnastics Canada and the Alberta Gymnastics Federation on this event will directly impact our region’s reputation and economy,” said Janelle Janis, Director of Edmonton Events. “Together with our venue partners, we look forward to welcoming more than 2,000 visitors and showing the gymnastics community why Edmonton has earned our reputation as a premier sporting destination.”

Held at the University of Alberta, the event will showcase the passion, creativity, and inclusive nature of the gymnastics community through performances by the Gymnaestrada groups in both indoor and city venues, while also affording Gymnastics Canada an opportunity to evaluate the groups in preparation for the 2023 World Gymnaestrada which will be held in Amsterdam, NED from July 30th to Aug 5th, 2023.

“We’re ecstatic to be co-hosting the Canadian Gymnaestrada in 2022 and welcoming gymnasts from across the country,” said Robin McDougall, Executive Director of the Alberta Gymnastics Federation. “This incredible event not only celebrates the foundations of physical literacy but also showcases incredible athletic ability and creativity in performance. Welcoming athletes from all ages, it is truly a celebration of our sport and embraces our ‘Active for Life’ philosophy.”
