Following the first in-person Canadian Championships in rhythmic gymnastics since 2019, Gymnastics Canada was extremely proud to host the 2022 RG Canadian Championships in partnership with the British Columbia Rhythmic Sport Gymnastics Federation (BCRSGF) at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Awards were handed out for the following categories: senior high-performance, senior open, junior high-performance, junior open, and novice for individual programs, and senior FIG, junior FIG, senior development, junior development, and novice for the group programs.
In the senior high-performance category, Tatiana Cocsanova (Questo RG, QC) captured the gold all-around. The silver was awarded to Michel Vivier (Viva RGC, ON), and the bronze was awarded to Suzanna Shahbazian (Questo RG, QC).
In 2022, Cocsanova has had a busy competition season already, as she travelled to Russia for the Moscow Grand Prix, to Spain for the Marbella Grand Prix, as well as Bulgaria for the Sofia World Cup!
“Last year, I became Canadian champion for the first time, but because it was online, I felt as if it wasn’t official. So, I promised that in 2022 I’ll do it in person,” shared Cocsanova following her gold medal performance. “There was a lot of pressure on me and a lot of fatigue from travelling from competition to competition to represent Canada at the world stage, but despite all this, I made it and now I can proudly say that I am a two-time Canadian champion. And I can tell you that it’s the first time in a while that I have been proud of myself.”
In the junior high-performance category, Karina Kamenetsky (Kalev Estienne, ON) was awarded the gold medal for top performance all-around. The podium also included Phoebe Wang (York Stars RGC, ON) in second place and Angeline Lin (Adagio Rhythmic, BC) in third place.
In the novice category, Gillian Lu (Trillium Rhythmic, ON) captured the gold medal all-around. Kate Vetricean (Questo RG, QC) finished with the silver medal, and Milana Sholkavich (Kalev Estienne, ON) finished with the bronze medal. Senior open winner was Katherina Bakhmutova (Trillium Rhythmic, ON) and Junior open Maria Mechkova (Toronto Aspirals, ON).
In the group programs, Team Glimmer (Glimmer Athletic Club, ON) captured the gold in the Senior FIG competition. Team Glimmer includes Alissa Levytskky, Alice Calugar, Ekaterina Kuzmenko, Yelizaveta Shaubert, Giada Katsyukevych, and Carmel Kallemaa. The podium also included Illusions (Illusions RGC, NS) with the silver medal, and Vertigo Senior Group (Vertigo RGA, AB) with the bronze medal.
Junior FIG group was won by Trillium Rhythmic, ON followed by Olympia RG, BC and 3rd Adagio Rhythmic Academy, BC.
“On behalf of Gymnastics Canada and the entire Rhythmic Gymnastics community, I want to commend the work of the Organising Committee in presenting an exceptional National Championships after such a long layoff,” said Gymnastics Canada CEO, Ian Moss. “It is so refreshing to finally have the chance to once again hold in person competitions and to celebrate the essence and positivity of friendly competition”.
