Ellie Black wins bronze at American Cup

Competing against a field that included many of the athletes she’d competed against at the 2015 World Championships, Black, who finished 7th overall at that event, scored 57.132 overall to take the bronze behind 2012 Olympic Games all-around champion Gabby Douglas of the USA who took gold with 60.165 points, and Maggie Nichols, also of the USA, who took silver with 59.699. Black finished fifth at the same event last year.

Black started the day on the vault where she scored 14.800 to rank fifth overall.

The uneven bars followed and a strong routine, which she debuted last month at the Elite Canada competition in Halifax, earned her 13.866 and moved her into a tie for third with Great Britain’s Amy Tinkler.

Next up was the beam, an event where she placed 7th at the 2015 World Championships, and although she had a few wobbles, she stayed on to score 14.400.

Black closed on the floor exercise, where she scored 14.066 despite stepping out of bounds, and defeated Tinkler by 1.2 points to take bronze.

Black now flies to Montreal, QC to be an ambassador at the 25th edition of the International Gymnix competition where she will be signing autographs for fans on Sunday and reconnecting with her fellow national team athletes.
