Onyshko, who was part of the team that finished 6th in the team event at the 2015 World Championships and qualified a team for Canada at the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, took gold on the uneven bars with a score of 14.425, on the beam with a score of 14.625, and on the floor with a score of 14.250. Shallon Olsen from Omega Gymnastics won gold on the vault with a score of 14.800, while hometown favourite Ellie Black took home silver on the vault with a score of 14.075, beam with a score of 14.000, and on the floor with a score of 14.225.
“Overall I was pretty happy with the performances just to come out again and get competing. I did four events so it was a good opportunity from day one just to go in and fix some things up. Somethings were a lot better and I had a couple of mistakes here and there, but I was overall pretty happy with it because that’s just part of the process of getting back into competition,” said Black following the competition as crowds of young gymnasts waited patiently to get a photo with her.
In the junior women’s apparatus finals, Chrobok dominated the competition, winning gold on the vault with a score of 14.375, beam with a score of 14.100, and floor with a score of 13.825. She also won silver on the uneven bars with a score of 12.000 behind Victoria Jurca of Gym-Fly who scored 12.475 to take gold.
The focus for all of these athletes now turns to international competitions as they prepare for the upcoming Canadian Championships in Edmonton at the end of May, and the Olympic Games in August stated Dave Brubaker, Gymnastics Canada’s national team director for women’s artistic gymnastics.
“Now that we’ve got the information to help select the national team, we’ll start executing our plan for international assignments. Isabela will go to a World Cup in Stuttgart, Ellie will go to the American Cup in Newark, and Madison (Copiak) will go to a World Cup in Glasgow. Those are three key events for our preparation with the senior team.”
Gymnastics Canada would like to thank Gymnastics Nova Scotia, Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club, Taiso Gymnastics Training Centre, Titan’s Gymnastics and Trampoline Club and all of the local sponsors for making this event such a success, and to the people of Halifax for coming out to support our country’s top gymnasts in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics.
