Calgary’s Copiak sixth at artistic gymnastics World Cup in Glasgow

MyKayla Skinner of the U.S., winner of two medals at the 2014 world championships, placed first with a score of 56.999 points, followed by Elisabeth Seitz of Germany with 55.732 points, and Fragapane at 55.398.

Copiak, a contender for Canada’s 2016 Olympic team, finished with 53.233 points and notched her best scores on vault (14.200) and uneven bars (13.300).

“I could have been a little bit more precise in a few places but I went out there and hit four for four which was my main goal,” said Copiak, a member of Canada’s silver-medal winning team at the 2015 Pan American Games.

“I got a lot of good experience that I can build on and now I need to go back to the gym and make a few upgrades and really push to the end of the season.”

Canadian coach Janna Ball of Calgary said Copiak’s great strength is her consistency.

“Madison has proven in the past she’s consistent and I’m glad she did that today and showed that she can perform under pressure,” said Ball, who coaches Copiak at the Calgary Gymnastics Centre.

“Looking ahead we’re going to really get prepared for nationals because that’s a big part of the qualification process for the Olympic team.”

The 2016 Canadian Artistic and Trampoline Gymnastics Championships will take place in Edmonton from May 31 – June 4.
