Bezzoubenko’s high degree of difficulty scored her 17.450 on hoop and 16.900 in ball – to leave her with a score of 34.350. Carmen Whelan (Aurora, ON) the 2016 Elite Canada all-around champion sits in second with a total score of 31.300 (15.750 in hoop; 15.550 in ball), while Katherine Uchida of Toronto sits third with a total score of 30.850 (15.600 hoop; 15.250 ball).
“Today, I felt very strong. I felt like I was back to my normal self. I was on fire and I was ready to go,” said Whelan who is just coming back from an ankle injury. “It’s the art of competing that matters much more to me than results because that’s the fire that burns down inside of me and that’s what I enjoy the most.”
In the junior competition, Alexandra Chtrevenskii from Questo RG in Quebec currently sits in first with 29.150 points from her rope and hoop routines. Natalie Garcia from Mississauga Newnorth in Ontario is in second with 28.800 points, and Aretehya Haberman from Chinook RG in Alberta is in third with 26.100.
The senior competition continues tomorrow with ribbon and clubs routines, while the juniors will present their ball and clubs routines. The top-15 from both junior and senior will advance to the finals on Sunday where they will perform on all four apparatus.
Awards for the novice and junior development groups will be presented tomorrow, along with the Junior and Senior Open all-around and apparatus awards.
