Bezzoubenko’s bid for rhythmic gymnastics berth in Rio comes to an end

Bezzoubenko started the day off with her hoop routine which scored 16.833 and had her ranked 8th. Second was the ball where she scored 16.666 to drop to 9th. A strong clubs routine moved her up to 7th position with a score of 16.800. In her ribbon routine, she scored 14.766 and had a 0.30 penalty for going out-of-bounds. That score dropped her to 13th place overall with a total score of 65.065.

“Patricia was really focused the past few days. She was there after three routines and then unfortunately with the last routine it just didn’t happen for her,” said Teresa Orr, National Team Director for rhythmic gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “Normally at a World Cup they compete two routines on one day, and two the next — today it was all four in one day, spread out over several hours, which was really tiring for the athletes.”

The top-10 gymnasts from today now move on to the event finals Friday, while 10 gymnasts had their names added to the list of qualifiers for the Olympic Games. One spot is still to be determined via the tripartite commission or continental representation, but directly ahead of Bezzoubenko in the named reserves is Karla Diaz of Mexico who would likely get the nod for continental representation.

Moving forward, Bezzoubenko will compete in several World Cup competitions in the upcoming months, and will look to defend her Canadian title at the Canadian Championships in Winnipeg this May.

The Canadian gymnastics team is now finalized for Rio – joining Rosie MacLennan and Jason Burnett from trampoline gymnastics will be five athletes from women’s artistic gymnastics to be named in June, and one male artistic gymnast to be named at the same time.
