Townsend top Canadian at Toyota International gymnastics meet in Japan

TOYOTA CITY, Japan — Sydney Townsend of Conestgo, Ont., was the top Canadian at the Toyota International gymnastics competition on Sunday, placing seventh on the balance beam.

Townsend, who helped clinch a berth for Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games two months ago at the world championships in Glasgow, Scotland scored 13.350 points for her best result of the two-day competition.

Helody Cyrenne of Montreal placed ninth with 12.450 points.

Russia’s Victoria Komova won gold with a score of 14.600 points, followed by silver medal winner Noemi Makra of Hungary, (14.300) and Yu Minobe of Japan with the bronze (14.300.)

In other results Sunday, Cyrenne and Kirsten Peterman of Cambridge, Ont., finished ninth and 10th respectively in the floor exercise won by Ksenia Afansasyeva of Russia.

On the first day of competition Saturday, Peterman placed ninth on both vault and uneven bars, Cyrenne, eighth on uneven bars and Townsend 10th on vault.

The Toyota International, an apparatus only competition, featured over 25 gymnasts from eight countries, plus a full team from Japan.
