MacLennan clinches 2016 Olympic berth for Canada at 2015 Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships

MacLennan, the reigning Olympic champion in women’s trampoline, clinched the Olympic berth in women’s trampoline by placing in the top-eight in Sunday’s semifinal and went on to finish just off the podium in the final with a score of 55.505 points for fourth.

Li Dan of China soared to the gold with 56.600 points, teammate Liu Lingling won silver (55.755) and Piatrenia Tatsiana of Belarus took the bronze (55.665).

Four-time Olympian Karen Cockburn of Toronto failed to complete her semifinal routine and wound up 24th, knocking her out of contention for a berth at the final Olympic qualification meet set for Rio de Janeiro in April.

In men’s trampoline 2008 Olympic silver medallist Jason Burnett of Toronto placed 18th to earn a spot for Canada at the last-chance qualifier in Rio.

Gao Lei of China won gold followed by Uladzislau Hancharou of Belarus and Andrey Yudin of Russia.

The top eight in both women’s and men’s trampoline at this year’s world championships earned an Olympic berth for their countries with a maximum of two per team. Another 13 athletes in both the men’s and women’s events, including Burnett, will battle it out for the remaining spots.

Sixteen competitors in both men’s and women’s trampoline will compete at the Rio Games.

In the women’s double mini-trampoline final top qualifier Danielle Gruber of Kelowna, B.C., placed seventh with 64.200 points.

Erin Jauch of the United States won the gold with 71.100 points, Jasmin Short of Great Britain, silver (69.800) and Lina Sjoeberg of Sweden, bronze (67.900).

In the non-Olympic events Canadian competitors qualified for the 2017 World Games in tumbling and double mini-trampoline for both men and women.
