Gymnastics Canada announces the 2021 call for nomination process for the Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors Athlete Representative Position.

Position Overview:

The Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors operates as a “policy” Board – it dispenses its fiduciary duty by setting policy and ensuring a strategic framework for the governance and operational leadership of GymCan’s mandate.  The GymCan Board also appoints Standing Committees who provide further leadership and expert direction in areas of operational/risk management priority that supports staff and other volunteer working committees.  Members of the Board of Directors come from all parts of the country, normally meet 3-4 times per year in person and monthly virtually, and all Board members serve without remuneration other than coverage of expenses to manage their roles on the Board. The GymCan national office is based in Ottawa, but most staff work virtually, led by a full time Chief Executive Officer.

 

The Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors consists of up to ten members, nine of which can be elected on a staggered two-year cycle by the voting membership at the Annual General Meeting. The Director-Athlete Representative is elected by Senior National Team members from all Olympic disciplines and holds equal standing to other Board members.

 

Role of a Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors member:

  • Accountable to the Membership throughout the year and at the Annual General Meeting
  • Commitment to the organization’s Vision, Mission and Values as stated in the Strategic Plan
  • Approve the annual budget, policies, and year-end financial reporting for the organization
  • Define roles and responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer
  • Attend all Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting
  • Be willing to devote appropriate time, talent and energy to on-going Board work
  • Provide strategic leadership with respect to the direction of the organization
  • Serve on Board Committees and contribute to special projects of the Board
  • Advocate for and engage in advocacy initiatives intended to further efforts of Gymnastics Canada and its membership for the improvement of the sport of Gymnastics in Canada
  • Other duties as required to ensure effective policy and management oversight for the organization.

 

 

Role of Director – Athlete Representative:

  • Attend GymCan Board meetings on a consistent basis (both face to face and virtual)
  • Provide leadership to the GymCan Athletes Commission as Chair of the Commission (arrange meetings, be available for regular dialogue/feedback, manage communication to the athlete membership through the Commission, manage the athlete discipline representative election process)
  • Represent the “athlete voice and perspective” at the GymCan Board level.
  • Work with the Athlete Commission to ensure appropriate athlete representation and perspective on Board sub-committees.
  • Where appropriate, liaise internationally with FIG and other FIG member countries in respect to athlete input for policy and program development for the sport.

Nomination Submission Information:

 

Eligibility:  To be considered for nomination, all nominees must be 18 years of age, and either be an active member of a GymCan Senior National Team or have been a GymCan Senior National Team member for a minimum period of 2 years.

 

Application:  All nominees are required to submit their names to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (listed below) with a brief resume and cover letter that provides an overview of their skill set and interest as it applies to the Board position.
