MacLennan leads Canadian trampoline team at season-opening World Cup

MacLennan, gearing up for a big year with the Pan Am Games in her hometown of Toronto, Ont. in July, placed third to advance to Saturday’s finals with a combined score of 101.325 points for her compulsory and optional routines.

China’s Li Dan, the 2010 world champion, topped a field of 38 competitors with a score of 103.485, and teammate Zhong Xingping was runner-up with 101.325 points.

Samantha Smith of Toronto, Ont. finished seventh with 98.645 points to earn Canada’s second spot in the eight-woman final while Samantha Sendel of Aurora, Ont., placed ninth with 98.230 points and Cloé Deschênes of Montreal, Que. was 26th with 92.800.

In the men’s trampoline prelims, brothers Keegan and Kyle Soehn of Red Deer, Alta., placed 23rd and 24th respectively in a field of 64 competitors.

In the tumbling competition, all three Canadians advanced to finals with Raphaëlle Villotte of Montreal, Que. and Erin Templeton of Regina, Sask. ranked fifth and seventh in the women’s event while Jon Schwaiger of Burlington, Ont., qualified seventh on the men’s side.

In a separate competition running at the same time as the World Cup meet, Sarah Milette of Montreal, Que. placed eighth in prelims to snag the last spot in the women’s trampoline final of the Peter the Great Cup and Tiana Hesmert of Vancouver, B.C. placed fourth in the women’s double-mini final.

In the men’s double-mini prelims of the same event, Jon Schwaiger and Denis Vachon of Burlington, Ont., both advanced to the final.
