Onyshko, who burst onto the international scene a year ago with a bronze medal in her World Cup debut, tied for first on floor, and placed second and third respectively on the balance beam and uneven bars to qualify for finals in three of four events.

Woo finished fourth on uneven bars and on fifth floor to join Onyshko in the medal hunt on Saturday and Sunday.

“My routines weren’t perfect but I’m happy with my performance,” said Woo, the older sister of Canadian junior champion, Rose.

Helody Cyrenne of Montreal placed ninth on vault and tenth on beam, to fall just short of the top-eight needed to advance to the finals.

In the men’s competition, Rene Cournoyer of Repentigny, Que., placed 13th on parallel bars, 26th on floor, and 38th on pommel horse.

“I didn’t qualify for the finals but I came close on parallel bars,” said Cournoyer, a second-year member of the Canadian men’s senior team.

“It was a great event and I’m very motivated for the future.”
